Inanimate Alice and Learning
Inanimate Alice is an interactive multimodal fiction, a born-digital novel relating the experiences of Alice and her imaginary digital friend, Brad.
I first became aware of Alice a little over a year ago. It was a casual encounter at first, shortly after the site had won yet another of various sundry awards as one of the best teaching and learning resources available, however, it has become a bit of a more complicated relationship over time. First, there is the issue of what to do with Alice, but perhaps I digress and have jumped too far ahead of our tale. As a result, I should pull in on the reins and return to the start, which would be, what is Inanimate Alice and (because of the title) should I begin to consider investing in some post apocalyptic survival bunker for myself and those nearest and dearest?
Thankfully, the transliteracy (more on that term later) bulwark known as Inanimate Alice offers immense educational hope rather than anything to fear. The digital novel is the brainchild of Canadian author Kate Pullinger and British/Canadian artist Chris Joseph and tells the story and adventures of the titular character from childhood to early adulthood. If Alice were only a static digitized novel, it would be a marvel. The artwork and prose meshing perfectly to give us a compelling look at the fears and hopes of our heroine. Yet, much more is at work here.
Inanimate Alice is alive and filled with transmedia promises. The story is delivered through various methods as and platforms. Children and adults as well, but the former even more so, receive information from multiple sources, and not in a tidy well structured order. With music, sound, collage, kinetic images, mixed media, interactive features, Alice duplicates that experience in a clever and engaging way.
Inanimate Alice can thus be used by a teacher in a myriad of ways and over a multitude of formats. I will confess to having not even scratched, perhaps only lightly poked, the surface of pedagogical opportunities offered by the work. Digital options are one thing, however, this project offers the educator the full breadth and palate of transliteracy possibilities to work with. Physical (old school) letters, discussion, creative art, geographical lessons, theatre projects, field trips etc…..
Hopefully, in a year´s time I will revisit this blog and reveal all of the exciting classroom adventures with students of all ages that I have embarked on alongside our friend Alice. Used in the curriculum throughout Australia and other English speaking countries, Inanimate Alice can find a new home in Spain and more specifically at English Wink.

Descubrí a Alice hace poco más de un año. Fue un encuentro casual en un primer momento, poco después de que el sitio hubiera ganado uno más de los varios premios obtenidos como uno de los mejores recursos de enseñanza y aprendizaje disponibles. Sin embargo, se ha convertido en una relación algo más complicada con el tiempo. En primer lugar, está la cuestión de qué hacer con Alice, pero quizás estoy divagando y he saltado demasiado lejos en nuestro cuento. Por ello, debo tirar de las riendas y volver al inicio, lo que sería, lo que es, Inanimate Alice, y dado su título, ¿debería empezar a pensar en invertir en algún búnker de supervivencia post apocalíptico para mí y mis allegados más cercanos y queridos?
Afortunadamente, la transliteración del baluarte conocido como Inanimate Alice ofrece una inmensa esperanza educativa más que algo a lo que temer. La novela digital es una idea original del autor canadiense Kate Pullinger y el artista británico/canadiense Chris Joseph, y cuenta la historia y las aventuras del personaje principal desde la niñez a la juventud. Si Alice fuera sólo una novela digitalizada estática, sería una maravilla. La obra de arte y la prosa que engrana perfectamente dan un aspecto convincente a los temores y esperanzas de nuestra heroína. Sin embargo, hay mucho más en el trabajo aquí presentado.
Inanimate Alice está viva y llena de promesas transmedia. La historia nos es entregada a través de diversos métodos y plataformas. Los niños y los adultos de igual manera, pero sobre todo los primeros, reciben información de múltiples fuentes, y no en un orden estructurado. Con la música, el sonido, el collage, las imágenes cinéticas, la técnica mixta, las características interactivas, Alice duplica esa experiencia de una manera inteligente y atractiva.
Inanimate Alice por lo tanto puede ser utilizado por un profesor en una miríada de formas y sobre una multitud de formatos. Voy a confesar que ni siquiera he profundizado, tal vez sólo ligeramente arañado, la superficie de oportunidades pedagógicas que ofrece para trabajar en clase. Las opciones digitales son una cosa, sin embargo, este proyecto ofrece al educador una amplitud de posibilidades transliterarias con las que trabajar. Cartas físicas (a la vieja usanza), discusiones, arte creativo, lecciones geográficas, proyectos de teatro, viajes de estudio, etc.
Espero que durante este año vuelva a este blog para descubrir todas las emocionantes aventuras que he emprendido junto a nuestra amiga Alice y compartirlas con los estudiantes de todas las edades en las clases.
Además este proyecto se utiliza en el plan de estudios de Australia y en otros países de habla inglesa, por lo que Inanimate Alice puede encontrar un nuevo hogar en España y más concretamente en English Wink.
